Preto Velho Pai Joaquim de Angola: The Grandfather Who Heals with Humility and Holy Words
In every Umbanda terreiro, when the smoke of the clay pipe rises slowly toward the ceiling and a wooden stool receives an elder with a profound gaze, hearts grow still. This is Pai Joaquim de Angola, one of the most beloved and revered Preto Velho, who arrives to teach, comfort, and heal with the wisdom of one who has lived it all.
Who is Pai Joaquim de Angola?
Pai Joaquim de Angola belongs to the Line of the Pretos Velhos, the Line of the Souls — spirits of Afro-descendant elders who in life knew the pain of slavery and today work in charity. His name reveals his root: Angola, the Bantu land from which so many of our ancestors came. When he incorporates into a medium, he presents himself bent over, seated on his small stool, wearing a straw hat, a white tunic, and his inseparable pipe, speaking slowly with simple words that pierce the soul.
He does not come to punish or to promise miracles. He comes to listen. His work is counsel, spiritual cleansing (descarrego), and healing with the herbs he learned in the fields and in the senzala: rue, guinea henweed, rosemary, and the power of the smoke that drives away negativity.
His line and his spiritual work
The Pretos Velhos work under the irradiation of Omulu, the Orisha of health, illness, and renewal. Pai Joaquim is a great "doctor of the soul": he soothes anguish, undoes negative works, strengthens the faith of the sick, and accompanies families in times of mourning. His sacred songs (pontos) name him the "grandfather of all," because he treats every consultant as another grandchild: with infinite patience and never judging.
Day, colors, and offerings
The day consecrated to the Pretos Velhos is Monday, the day of the Souls, and they are also honored on May 13th, the date of the abolition of slavery in Brazil. Their colors are white and black, like the beads of their necklaces, representing light and shadow, life and death reconciled.
His offerings are humble, like him: white candles, strong black coffee, tobacco for his pipe, white flowers, toasted corn, and a glass of fresh water. He asks for no luxuries: a quiet corner, a lit candle, and a sincere heart are enough for his presence to be felt.
His teachings
Pai Joaquim teaches with proverbs from the senzala that hold true for modern life: that humility is true greatness, that hatred is overcome with forgiveness, that faith is proven through deeds, and that patience achieves everything. "Filho meu" (my child), he says in a measured voice, "haste is the enemy of healing. Trust, work, and let God's time do its work."
Whoever consults Pai Joaquim leaves the terreiro with a lighter heart and the certainty of never being alone: the grandparents watch over us from the other side, and their wisdom lives on in every word of comfort.
