Exu Sete Encruzilhadas: Lord of the Seven Crossroads in Kimbanda
There is a point on the road where seven paths cross and destiny hangs suspended for an instant. That point has an owner, and his name is spoken with respect in every terreiro: Exu Sete Encruzilhadas, the lord of the seven crossroads. In Kimbanda he is one of the most widely known and respected exus, the guardian of the crossings where travelers of this world and the other make decisions that change lives.
The crossroads is Exu's natural temple. Where roads open in seven directions, Sete Encruzilhadas sits to observe, to order and to decide. Tradition says that nothing passes through a crossing without his knowledge, and that whoever walks in good faith finds in him a steadfast protector, while whoever crosses with bad intentions meets a justice from which there is no escape.
The lord of the crossing paths
Sete Encruzilhadas belongs to the kingdom of the Exus of the roads, and his dwelling is the crossroads: the intersection of streets, of trails, of paths. The seven in his name is no ordinary number: it stands for the seven roads, the seven directions, the seven doors through which forces enter and leave. He rules them all. Tradition says that when a walker stops at a crossing not knowing which way to turn, Sete Encruzilhadas whispers the right direction into his ear.
His spiritual work is to open roads: he undoes the obstacles that stall people's lives, unties the knots of destiny, cleanses paths burdened with negative energies and protects those who travel —literally and symbolically— through the crossings of existence. Where Sete Encruzilhadas stands guard, no evil blocks the way of his own.
His word is law
What sets this exu apart from all others is the power of his word. In the terreiros it is said that the word of Sete Encruzilhadas is law: what he decrees comes to pass. He does not speak idly, he does not promise in vain and he does not tolerate lies. Whoever asks him with a clean heart and truthful words receives an answer; whoever lies to him or asks harm for an innocent receives back the weight of their own intention.
His justice is relentless toward those who do wrong. Sete Encruzilhadas is not cruel, but neither is he lenient with wickedness: he returns to each what they sow. That is why mediums describe him as a serious lord, of magnetic presence and piercing gaze, who imposes order merely by appearing. And that is also why those who walk straight love him: they know that at the crossroads there is a judge who cannot be bought.
Day, colors and offerings
His colors are black and red, the colors of Exu, of fire and of night, of the power that opens and the power that closes. His working day is Monday, when the energies of the roads renew themselves, and he is honored especially at open crossroads, away from the bustle, as evening falls.
Offerings to Sete Encruzilhadas are laid at the center of crossroads: the traditional padê of manioc flour with dendê oil, cachaça, cigars, black candles —and red ones too—, coins and, tradition says, seven of each thing, in honor of his name. Everything is given with respect, asking the lord of the crossing for permission before leaving the offering and giving thanks upon withdrawing, for in his kingdom the forms are followed to the letter.
The teachings of the crossing
Exu Sete Encruzilhadas' deepest message is that life is made of crossroads. Every important decision is a crossing of seven roads, and the fear of choosing is what puts the most obstacles in people's lives. He teaches us to stop, to look at the seven directions calmly and to choose with a firm heart, without looking back once the decision is made.
Those who follow him learn not to fear changes of direction, to patiently undo the obstacles that appear and to walk with heads held high through the crossings of existence. For the lord of the seven crossroads does not choose for us: he gives us the strength to choose well.
May his guard always open the roads of the sons and daughters of this noble phalanx, and may no crossing ever find them alone.
