Exu Meia-Noite: The Guardian of Midnight in Kimbanda

There is an hour when the world falls silent and truth dares to come out: midnight. And in that hour he rules: Exu Meia-Noite, the Lord of Midnight. In Kimbanda he is the guardian of the threshold between day and night, the one who keeps watch while everyone sleeps and who opens the doors that only open when the clock strikes twelve.

Meia-Noite belongs to the phalanx of the Exus of the crossroads, and his work is to protect in the darkest hour: when the night is at its deepest, when defenses drop and dangers approach without a sound. Mediums say his black cape shines with full-moon light, and that his hat is so tall it brushes the stars. Whoever calls on him at midnight is not left alone in the dark.

The truth of midnight

Meia-Noite's deepest teaching is that at midnight the masks fall. He teaches that the day is for disguises and the night for truth: in the hour when no one is watching, each person is who they truly are. That is why those who need to know someone's truth seek him out, those who suspect betrayal, those who want the hidden to be revealed. Meia-Noite does not lie: at midnight, his word is law.

He is also the great opener of closed paths: when a door will not open by day, he opens it by night; when a job does not come through, when a love does not return, when justice does not arrive, Meia-Noite takes the midnight key and turns the lock. But he charges his price: whoever asks him at midnight must keep what they promise, for this Exu forgets no bargain.

Day, colors and offerings

His colors are black and red, the colors of deep night and vital force. His working day is Monday, and his hour is, of course, midnight: he is honored at crossroads when the clock strikes twelve.

Offerings to Meia-Noite are laid at crossroads at midnight: black candles, cachaça, cigars, red roses and farofa. Everything is given with respect and with the request spoken clearly, for this Exu dislikes half-words: at midnight one speaks plainly or does not speak.

The teachings of the Lord of Midnight

Exu Meia-Noite's deepest message is that darkness is not an enemy, it is a teacher. He teaches that there are truths only seen at night, that there are forces only awakened at midnight, and that whoever learns to walk in darkness without fear walks by day without stumbling.

Those who follow him learn not to fear the night of life — grief, waiting, loneliness — and to understand that midnight is not the end of the day, it is the beginning of the new one. For Meia-Noite knows something those who sleep early forget: that when the clock strikes twelve, one day dies and another is born, and whoever is awake in that instant chooses which day they want to live.

May his midnight cape and his full moon always protect the sons and daughters of this noble phalanx. Laroyê, Exu Meia-Noite!
