Erê Cosme e Damião: the Divine Children of Joy in Umbanda

In Umbanda there are spirits who do not arrive with solemnity or grave words, but with a burst of laughter that lights up the hall. They are the erês, the child spirits, and among them the most beloved of all the faithful: Cosme e Damião, the divine children of joy. Wherever they manifest, sadness finds no place to sit.

The erês are spirits of absolute purity, souls who work in the vibration of childlike innocence. They know no malice, hold no grudges and understand nothing of complications: their way of healing is the simplest and most powerful of all, joy. Cosme e Damião are the best known and most celebrated manifestation of this line, and their feast draws crowds every year carrying sweets, toys and smiles.

The child saints and syncretism

Cosme and Damian were, according to Christian tradition, two physician brothers who healed without charging, known as the "moneyless" saints for their generosity toward the sick. Their feast is celebrated on September 27, a date when Umbanda terreiros fill with celebration, tables of sweets and children running among the faithful. In Afro-Brazilian syncretism, these saints merged with the energy of the erês, the child spirits who heal with laughter and purity of heart.

Tradition says these children are no ordinary children: they are ancient spirits who choose to manifest in the purest possible form, that of childhood, to remind us that happiness needs no complicated reasons. Their message crosses centuries and religions: selfless kindness, the medicine of love, healing that asks for nothing in return.

The joy that heals

The spiritual work of Cosme e Damião is, above all, healing, and especially the healing of children. Mothers who bring their sick little ones to the feet of these erês know it well: where the medicine of men struggles to reach, the joy of the divine children opens paths. It is said that many ailments afflicting the little ones —crying without cause, frights, fevers that will not break— dissolve before the laughter of Cosme e Damião.

But their medicine is not only for children of the body. The erês also work with the inner child of every adult, that part of us that life hardened with blows and disappointments. Whoever approaches Cosme e Damião with an open heart leaves renewed, wanting to play, to laugh, to believe in simple things again. Their laughter disarms the deepest sorrows, because sorrow does not know what to do before a joy that needs no reason.

Mediums who receive these erês describe the experience as a bath of light: the body grows light, worries shrink, and for a moment everything seems possible again. That is the spiritual signature of Cosme e Damião: restoring hope with the naturalness of a child offering a candy.

Sweets, candies and the colors of celebration

Cosme e Damião are honored for what they are: children. At their feast and in their tributes, sweets, candies, chocolates, guaraná and toys are shared among all present, in a celebration that turns the terreiro into a children's party. No dark solemnity here: the offering is to share, to give, to distribute happiness among everyone who comes.

Their colors are light blue and pink, the colors of tenderness and childhood, dressing the altars and the clothes of those who honor them. Tradition says these children rejoice in simple things: a well-chilled glass of guaraná, a little bag of candies, a new toy placed with love at the feet of their image. What matters is not the value of the offering, but the joy with which it is given.

It is also customary to bring the family's children to these feasts, so they may receive the blessing of the erês and grow under their protection. For Cosme e Damião do not only heal: they watch over, caring for the little ones of the household like elder brothers from the spiritual plane.

The message of purity of heart

If what Cosme e Damião teach had to be summed up in one sentence, it would be this: purity of heart can do anything. In a world that rewards cunning and distrusts kindness, these divine children remind us that innocence is not weakness but the greatest strength there is. Whoever keeps a pure heart crosses storms without being soiled, like the child who plays in the rain unafraid of getting wet.

Their presence in Umbanda is also a call to generosity: to heal without charging, to give without expecting, to hand out sweets without looking at whom. The physician saints of Christian tradition and the erês of Umbanda meet at that exact point where faith becomes action and love becomes medicine.

May the laughter of Cosme e Damião always light up homes, may no child cry without comfort, and may joy, innocence and purity find dwelling in every heart that invokes them with faith.
