Ifá es el antiguo sistema de adivinación Yoruba originario de Nigeria con más de 1000 años de antigüedad, reconocido por la UNESCO como patrimonio cultural inmaterial de la humanidad. Los Babalawos (sacerdotes de Ifá, literalmente 'padres del secreto') interpretan los 256 Odus (signos adivinatorios) usando ikines (semillas de palma sagrada) o el opelé (cadena de adivinación con 8 mitades de nuez). Cada Odu contiene cientos de Itán (mitos, historias y proverbios) que guían el destino de las personas y proporcionan soluciones a problemas. El sistema es tan complejo que requiere años de estudio intensivo: un Babalawo debe memorizar miles de versos, sacrificios apropiados (ebó), remedios herbales y rituales específicos para cada situación. Ifá enseña que el destino (ayanmo) puede modificarse mediante el comportamiento ético (iwá pele - carácter suave y paciente), los rituales apropiados y el respeto a los ancestros. Ifá is the ancient Yoruba divination system originating from Nigeria with over 1000 years of history, recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Babalawos (priests of Ifá, literally 'fathers of the secret') interpret the 256 Odus (divination signs) using ikines (sacred palm nuts) or the opelé (divination chain with 8 halves of nuts). Each Odu contains hundreds of Itán (myths, stories and proverbs) that guide people's destiny and provide solutions to problems. The system is so complex it requires years of intensive study: a Babalawo must memorize thousands of verses, appropriate sacrifices (ebó), herbal remedies and specific rituals for each situation. Ifá teaches that destiny (ayanmo) can be modified through ethical behavior (iwá pele - soft and patient character), appropriate rituals and respect for ancestors. The divination ceremony begins with invocations to Orunmila (Orixá of wisdom and divination), followed by casting the seeds that reveal the consulted Odu. The Babalawo then recites the corresponding verses and prescribes the necessary ebó. Ifá is practiced in Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Cuba (as Cuban Ifá), Brazil and African diaspora communities worldwide.
